How we Work - Existential Coaching
Existential coaching engages with a person’s unique way of being in the world - with the
physical or work environment, others and with one's self. It bases itself on certain
shared human ‘givens’, or facts, about being human :
- We are free to choose among possibilities available to us, even if
we believe that we don’t have any choice
- We act from particular moods or dispositions - although these may
alter, we can’t be mood-free
- We act from a system of values, from which we gain a sense of who we
are and what we stand for
- We live according to meanings that we give to things, and these in
turn allow us to create our aspirations. They impel us to take
significant future actions
- We are temporal beings - our relationship to time reflects our
attitude to life, whether always projecting ourselves forward into new
possibilities and what we are to become, or solely relying on our
historical patterns of thinking, acting and behaving
- We dwell among others; this can be a challenge for us (as in
conflicts) as well as a source of deeper connectedness (when we form
close attachments, for example)
- We live in irresolvable paradoxes, which we can either accept and
live with more creatively or
resist and oppose, and in potentially resolvable contradictions, which we can choose to address
or deny and ignore
Our coaching enables individuals to consider their fundamental stance
on and in the world, by attending to their currently-held worldview, in
order that they can recognise and act on possibilities that are
available to them, as well as address challenges that confront them. The benefits of Existential coaching are:
- Sustainable rather than temporary personal transformations
- A deeply grounded confidence and self-awareness that underpins and supports
behaviours and actions
- A greater awareness of the bigger picture over the span of a lifetime
- A more profound perspective on life direction, and its meaning and
significance
- Proven results and positive outcomes in relation to identified
goals and expectations
- A shift towards greater openness in one’s experience
of the world, others, and oneself
